The legend of Sangeh : The monkey forest at Sangeh is featured, so the Balinese say, in Ramayana epic. Hanuman, the leader of the monkey army, sought to kill the evil Rawana, kinf of Lanka, by crushing him between two halves of Mahameru, the holy mountain. Rawana, who could not be destroyed on the earth or in the air, would thus be trapped between the two elements. On his way to perform this task, Hanuman dropped a piece of mountain near Sangeh, complete with a band of monkey.
