Kerta Gosa Hall of Justice

Kerta Gosa is located in Klungkung regency, eastern Bali Tours. Kerta Gosa is the hall of justice was effectively the supreme court of the Klungkung kingdom, where disputes and cases that could not be settled at the village level were eventually brought. this open sided pavilion is superb example of Klungkung architecture, and it’s ceiling is completely covered inside with fine painting in Klungkung style. The painting done on asbestos sheeting, were installed in the 1940s, replacing cloth paintings. which had deteriorated.

The row of ceiling panels actually depict several different themes. the lowest level illustrates five tales from Bali’s answer to the Arabian Nights, where girl called Tantri spin a different yarn every night. The next two row are scenes from Bima travel in the afterlife, where he witnesses the torment of evil-doers. The gruesome tortures are shown clearly, but there are different interpretations of what punishment goes with what crime. The fourth row of panels depicts the story of Garuda search for the elixir of life, while the fifth row shows events on Balinese astrological calendar. The next three rows return the story of Bima, this time traveling in heaven, with doves and a lotus flower at the apex of ceiling.
